                               William H. Chamberlain   (Great Grandfather)

      

 

        Private William H. Chamberlain of Wayne Co.,PA. served in Co. A, 56th PA. until

 

twice wounded at Gettysburg. After recovering in Philadelphia hospitals, he re-enlisted in

 

the 9th Veteran Reserve Corps, made Corporal and commanded the central White House

 

 guard station. Thus, he came to be sent to guard Lincoln’s family the night of the

 

assassination. Chamberlain was only 19 at the war’s end.
